We loved Germany. Apart from the friendly people and the amazing landscapes, Germany felt like an incredibly positive wildcat country. Everything that is negative for wildcats in Scotland (all those factors of population history and habitat that have ‘driven’ hybridisation in Scotland) have been positive in Germany for a long time with the unsurprising result that hybridisation is minimal and the wildcat population is healthy and expanding. Huge thanks to all of the researchers and ecologists who met with us during our travels, welcomed us so warmly and answered my (many) questions with such enthusiasm.
